While a lot of us are living away from family and friends, dogs bring in unconditional love and much-needed companionship- added with mental and physical benefits!

If you are an animal lover, you’d know there are no limits to the immediate joys when coming back home to a wagging tail and a four-legged furry friend! And there is no denying the fact that humans and dogs share a deep bond where they can read through your tone of voice, body language, and even gestures (and they know when the hooman will bring in some treat!). However, many of us are unaware of the physical and mental health benefits of being in the company of a canine.

Research shows how dogs play a major role in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression, ease loneliness and even improve cardiovascular health. Amid the social isolation due to the coronavirus pandemic, these benefits are more important than ever. A recent study shows that pet owners over 65 years make 30% fewer visits to their doctors than those without pets. And of course, they are loyal, snuggly and dependable companions too!

Here are a few ways how having a dog improves physical, social and mental health:

Your partner in sticking to a routine
Dogs require a regular feeding and exercise schedule. The routine of caring for your furry friend- feeding, brushing, going on walks — helps give your day a structure. Along with it, going for a walk, run or a hike together is as beneficial for you as it is for them. A recent study claims that people with a dog walked 30 minutes more per week than they did before owning one. And once you are outside, fresh air and sunshine can uplift your mood and keep your pet happy too.

Gives you company like no other
What’s more comforting than a cheerful and understanding buddy by your side! You’d agree that once you bring a dog home, it’s more like a family member, playing tricks, cuddling and even trying to uplift your mood when low. According to clinical researchers, pet owners who talk to their dogs are more likely to be happy, motivated and active. Dogs are great companions, and especially amid the social isolation when a lot of people are cut off from their family and friends, playing with them or waking up to their ‘woof!’, brings cheer to the day.

Adds to your joy & reduces stress
Remember the time when you watched that dog video or a pup’s picture and smiled? That’s how it is, dogs are usually playful and looking at them doing antics gets you smiling so often. Also, they are keen observers of their human’s mood and have a knack for making things better. Moreover, interacting with a friendly dog reduces levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. And it increases the release of oxytocin — another chemical in the body that reduces stress naturally. The sensory act of stroking a pet lowers blood pressure too. So, next time you feel low, demotivated or alone, try spending some time with your pawsome bundle of joy!
